The Wellington was a huge Wilsons boozer on the corner of Barlow Moor Road and Wilmslow Road in Didsbury, opposite the still-serving Nelson. Shown here in 1967 and then in 1970 after Watneys had acquired the Newton Heath brewery, the Wellington was previously known as the Grey Mare, although it probably started out as the Wellington. By 1972 it had been renamed the Calvacade, as a 'Fork & Cask House'.

The Wellington still survives today has a licensed establishment, but unfortunately not as a public house - it's the Zizzi restaurant, having briefly been a Japanese restaurant. The pub finished as the Clock Tower, named after the clock tower you can see to the right in the above snap, and before that it was Squires. I did visit the Clock Tower about 10 years ago and recall a vast and rather empty boozer so it was no surprise when it closed in about 2008.
