Cumberland House, Ellesmere Street

Cumberland House, Ellesmere Street, Salford. (c) Salford Pubs of the 70s at flickr.

In the days when Ellesmere Street used to run all the way from Ordsall Park up to Regent Road, the Cumberland House stood on the south-west corner of Martha Street, just south off Regent Road.  Opening in 1868, the beerhouse's licensee by 1905, Walter Harreston, was fined 2/6d for giving "long pull".  This was the unthinkable practice of over-serving your customers in order to keep the pub busy, and the Cumberland was so known locally as 'The Long Pull'.  Police sent in lad with a jug for a pint and he was given 1 and three-quarter pints, and in his defence the landlord claimed "the man at the Egerton is doing it worse than me".  By now Cornbrook Brewery had the Cumberland House but it eventually closed in 1974 [1].
