Magpie, Butler Street

Magpie, Butler Street, Ancoats, 1992. (c) Alan Winfield with permission.

The Magpie estate pub on the Ancoats / Miles Platting border is shown at the archives in 1967 as a Threlfalls house.  As 1960s/'70s estate boozers go, the Magpie was particularly functional (i.e. ugly), built in 1963 to replace the Houghton Arms which stood on this corner of Bradford Road and Butler Street.  Later under Whitbread, the Magpie has its Chesters signs outside and offered Chesters Mild and Trophy bitter when Alan Winfield visited in 1992.  Since it was pulled down, nothing has replaced the Magpie on this grassy corner.
